The Lymphatic System
Your Lymphatic System runs as a second transportation system, interconnecting with your Blood System; paramount to your wellbeing in many ways and without it you would not live.
Its two main functions are to firstly support your Immune System by fighting infection and secondly to transport emulsified fats and essential fat soluble nutrients from the Small Intestine through the Lymph channels and into the Bloodstream.
Much like the rest of our system, it flows via one way valves by a pump action consisting of pressure and muscles contraction.
Lymph is a clear fluid, constantly being filtered from the blood. It seeps through the blood vessel wall and remains in pockets between cells before draining into a network of Lymph Capillaries that flow throughout the body. From these Capillaries, the Lymph flows into larger vessels called Lymphocytes.
Within this circulatory process there is a vital interaction with our Immune System, which includes the Spleen, Tonsils, White Blood Cells, Bone Marrow, Thymus, Adenoids and The Liver.
Although we only tend to think of our Immune System when we have an infection, it is actually in operation the whole time. It provides low grade activity and maintains defence against the every day occurrence of breathing, digestion and skin which each absorb a certain amount of toxic substances and infective organisms.
In addition to this when the body is under threat by sudden Virus or Infection our Immune System responds by sending a ‘Lymph Alert’- many of our organs are on standby, ready to go into battle. Our Lymph Glands (nodes) swell up in response, and Lymphocytes are then transported to the site of infection or injury acting as a barrier by neutralizing or destroying micro-organisms and toxins.
Essential Nutrients
The Lymphatic System also acts as a vessel for transporting our fat-soluble nutrients, vitamins A, D, E and F and all our Essential Fatty Acids. These are all needed to maintain perfect health, eyesight, bone and skin structure, and memory function plus much, much more…….Our Lymphatic System is a fantastic, multi-tasking Distribution Network and must flow and function properly in order for us to remain healthy.
The Lymphatic Network eventually drains back into the bloodstream via two ducts either side of the neck, and the nutrients are only then able to be metabolised in the body.
